Army of New

March 13th, 2008 posted by SpecialK89 in General News, PlayStation 3, Xbox 360

Another Kill? Hell Yeah.

Recently in the gaming industry, there has been a lot of talk about the new 360 and PS3 game, “Army of Two” (hereby called “AoT” throughout this article). For anyone unfamiliar with this game, it follows around two mercenaries–Tyson Rios and Elliot Salem, two ex-army guys–as they fight terrorists all over the world. The more missions they complete, the more cash they get, the better weapons they buy. Where the uniqueness comes from in AoT is in the “aggro” system it has, in which the game puts a higher emphasis on teamwork and ingenuity in co-op, rather than the simple “shoot, kill, wait” method many other games employ. At the same time, AoT relies heavily on the two-player co-op, as the one-player mode often results in much confusion and difficulties when it comes to the AI.

However as more and more press about AoT is garnered, a unique phenomenon seems to be sweeping across all sorts of game forums, websites and reviewers; the idea that this game is simply too violent. While criticism of videogame violence isn’t a new concept (in fact has been around for a while–just look at any news article about the 1976 game “Death Race”), for the most part it has come from outside the industry; politicians are always quick to point fingers at music, movies and videogames when it comes to witnessed violence. What’s unique and new for AoT however, is the fact that much of it’s criticism is coming from the inside. (more…)

PS3 “more fun” than Wii according to Sony CEO

December 15th, 2007 posted by Andrew in PlayStation 3

If you’re reading through the obituaries and see the CEO of Sony, Howard Stringer in there, it may have something to do with the fact he says the PS3 is “infinitely more fun” than the Nintendo Wii.

While speaking to the Guardian, Stringer stated, “We’ve some catching up to do, but at least we have the opportunity to connect the PS3 with the PlayStation Portable and beyond.” Oh, connectivity to the PSP? Okay, that sure is exciting… right? Meh.

“I’m happy the Wii seems to be running a bit short of hardware, the PlayStation 3 will come into its own because its [games] are infinitely more fun, demanding and exciting.”

Stringer believes the PS3 is going to come through after-all. It out-sold the Wii in Japan last month for the first time, 183,000 - 159,000. “I’m glad that the last few weeks have generated excitement about PlayStation 3,” he said. “Everyone’s stopped talking about it the way they were six months ago.”

PlayStation 3 Turns One - Happy Birthday, PS3!

November 17th, 2007 posted by Artis Oracle in PlayStation 3

It’s been a rough year for Sony’s prized console. From initial like to rabid bandwagon-style dislike, the console has been plagued with negative press and a lack of quality games for it. However, sales of the console have recently begun to elevate thanks to the addition of the less-costly 20 GB SKU, which retails for $399 USD.

Since it’s release, the PlayStation 3 has managed to sell 5.6 million consoles worldwide, with 2 million of those landing in North America. 23 parties are responsible for creating content on the console, and 160 new games are due by the end of this fiscal year. In addition, games are now beginning to be developed on the PlayStation 3 console and then ported to other consoles, previously done in reverse (Xbox 360 games were developed then ported to the PS3). Finally, it is worth noting that Blu-Ray continues to enjoy success in sales and numbers of movies available over HD-DVD, thus making the PS3 a valuable platform for high-definition movie watching.

Metal Gear Solid 4 Gameplay Footage

July 24th, 2007 posted by KJ in PlayStation 3

Just another one of those videos that have stormed the net. New gameplay footage has been released for Metal Gear Solid 4, and I have to say, that was probably the best 15 minutes and 18 seconds ever used in my life. The scenery, though desolate, looks gorgeous. I think it was hilarious when he pulled out the ‘adult’ magazine in the middle of the game too. Anyway, follow the link and observe the awesome for yourself.
