Virtual Console… Tuesday?? (April 21, 2008)

Or, in other words, “Virtual Console Monday: Let’s Forget it’s actually Monday today” Edition. Monday or Tuesday, it doesn’t change what the console served up for us yesterday.

First up, River City Ransom for the NES. This came out in the golden age of Beat-Em-Ups like Final Fight and Streets of Rage. This one stands out from the crowd for the stat system that allows you to upgrade your characters by doing things like eating food, reading books, etc. It’s also known for it’s fast pace and stupid comments your enemies utter, as well. All in all it’s a very fun game, and to top it off, it’s two player, so grab a friend to help you save the city (or throw garbage cans at eachother, whatever floats your boat.)

Secondly, Phantasy Star III : Generations of Doom. With a mouthful of a title like that, you can probably assume this game is an RPG, which it is. Like the name implies, theres a “Generation” system, which means you’ll eventually be playing as your hero’s kids or whatever, instead of one main hero though the entire game, which actually adds branching paths to the whole deal. Unfortunately, it’s pretty slow paced (on RPG standards, I mean) and most Phantasy Phans (Oh-ho) prefer the next one in the series, so you might want to hold your breath for it. It might just quench your thirst if you’re looking for an RPG on the VC and don’t mind the pace, though.
