After a few rather underwhelming weeks, the Virtual Console dishes out both Mega Turrican and Fantasy Zone for those who felt a bit let down (like me) have a good moment. How extra nice of them!

Just two weeks after the debut of the Sega Master System with Wonder Boy, Fantasy Zone gets released to make sure there’s more than a measly one Master System title. Fantasy Zone is a scrolling shooter like Super R-Type which was released a few weeks ago. This game, though, is unique for its graphic style, which contains many bright colors in it, so if you don’t like colorful games, you’re better up passing up this game, but you’re missing out on a pretty enjoyable game, and it’s not like your eyes are gonna melt or whatever if you see bright colors. It also features a “cash” system, which was unique for the time, meaning you could use money acquired from destroyed from enemy ships to gain new weapons and attributes, all in all makeing the game more enjoyable. Considering it’s low price, this game has a lot going for it.

Mega Turrican is the Genesis/Mega Drive follow up to the (in my opinion) fun Turrican series. Basically, it’s an arcade-y style shooter, with good graphics and music to boot. Generally, if you ever enjoyed Gunstar Heroes or Contra : Hard Corps for your Genesis, Mega Turrican will not leave you disappointed. The main downfall for this game is that it was released really closed to Super Turrican’s release, and that game is a bit better than Mega Turrican. Still, it’s not like both are the same game, so if you like one and have enough money, you might want to consider the other. Mega is the cheaper of the two, so it’s reccomended that you start with this one if you want to give the series a go.
