We just got some breaking news on GTA4, including spoilers to what I’m sure will be a highly controversial ending. Those with weak hearts shouldn’t proceed…
For the most part, the plot is familiar to anyone who played a GTA3 game: Niko comes into town and works his way up the criminal food chain, taking out rivals and building his own mini-empire. However, late in the game some myterious phone calls send him on a series of missions, culminating in Niko mistakenly assassinating his cousin, Roman, who lured him to America in the first place.
After realizing his mistake, Niko becomes depressed and jaded with the culture and decadence of Liberty City. After a cutscene full of montage shots of the previous missions, he resolves to strap on a bomb vest and take out Grand Central Terminal (renamed Grand Central Stationary in the game). With a cry of “Allah be with me!” he detonates the bomb vest in a spectacular explosion that shows off all the capabilities of the physics engine in one glorious masterpiece.
After the fadeout and credits sequence, the game fades in on Claude, protagonist of GTA3, sitting in a dark room. He looks up at the ‘camera’ and speaks aloud on scene for the first time, his line voiced by none other than David Hayter of Metal Gear Solid. “Just as keikaku.”
