Free Game Friday! #2

Kong

This weeks game is Kong, a top down shooter sporting several different weapons, gametypes, and multiplayer. Kong features apes that are, apparently, thirsty for some ape blood. Using a wide arsenal of weapons you can find laying around, your objective is to kill as many enemies as possible and win.

Clean, easy to use interface showcasing the score at the top center, map top right, weapons and health in top and bottom left corners.

Kong sports your standard three modes: Deathmatch, Team Deathmatch, and Capture the Flag. The modes are in no way unique themselves, but the gameplay sure is. You spawn with a Katana and a Machine gun, which only has two clips of ammo. Scattered around the map are various weapons, ranging from a cannon to rocket launchers to banana bombs. All handle differently and are well balanced usually allowing for an even match up against them all.

Spectate mode allows you to roam around in the 3d setting.

Kong provides several default levels (near 20+) that all sport different and unique setups. The game’s 3d surroundings add for another unique element in the game, where you can actually get up to different areas and attack people down below or avoid fire. There are also jump pads and portals, which allow you to reach different heights, or teleport to a different area completely allowing for different tactics and ways to run from a fight. If you get bored of the levels provided (not likely), you can go off and create your own with the built in level editor. You can specify the map size and every single thing in it. While I’ve never been particularly good at creating anything truly unique (see Phun) there is a lot to mess with and some really interesting possibilities.

The game sports online multiplayer with the ability to host and join a server, but good luck really finding one to join. There weren’t any servers on during my runs, so I was forced to stick to singleplayer. The game does provide bots to play against though and they’re surprisingly good. It was interesting to see the mob mentality a few of them had. You can also spectate the fights, which gives you control of the camera allowing for a free-roaming view of the fights from many different perspectives.

Kong was developed by a small team of four and still receives updates. You can check out and download the game at: http://www.konggame.co.uk/ . Be sure to check out our gallery of screenshots.
