Free Game Friday! #1
March 14th, 2008 posted by KJ in PC

Welcome to the first Free Game Friday article! Free Game Friday will be biweekly article I’ll write on some free game for the PC. The games will differ each time and will span all the game genres. Some of the games I write about may already be popular, others may quite possibly be in their beta stages. I’ll do the best I can to get something unique every single article though.

Create a contraption to launch objects
This week’s focus is on a game I just recently discovered. The game is called “Phun” (pun intended) and is a 2D, physics oriented, drawing game. There are no set goals or objectives in this game, so you’re free to create and destroy as you wish. As previously mentioned, this game is heavily focused on 2d physics. Every single thing you draw can be manipulated in one way or another. You can create hinges, and springs to farther control your setup. Every object has its own friction, bounciness, and other varying features that can differentiate it from other objects.
The game also sports some other very interesting features. One of my favorites involved turning some huge object into thousands of tiny water droplets and watching them rain down on everything, destroying the scene. But it also includes the ability to allow for some user interaction (using the arrow keys). You can also create motors to further control the manipulate the scene, and with them create complex contraptions.

Create unique scenes using motors, hinges, and fixes.
I’m particularly bad at creating anything unique, especially without help. However, there’s plenty of it over at the game’s website. A small community has developed around the game and will help if you need it. The site also sports a Wiki with help and tutorials if needed. It’s also interesting to note that the site includes an scene sharer, so you can share your creations with everyone else.
Phun was designed by a college student for his thesis and is free to download and play at Phun.at. Phun is currently in beta and is available for Windows, Linux, and soon for Mac
Check YouTube for some videos of it in action or check out some of our screenshots.*
Due to technical issues, there won’t be a gallery for this article.
