E3 ‘07 - Virtua Fighter 5 goes online for 360, PS3 left in the dust yet again

Sega of America announced today that the Xbox 360 version of Virtua Fighter 5 will hit this fall with a plethora of upgrades, the most significant being two player online support via Xbox Live. Initially a PS3 exclusive, the announcement of the 360 version’s new features makes February’s PS3 release look less powerful on Sony’s console than ever.
In addition to online support, Sega revealed several upgrades to the game’s “DOJO” and “Quest” modes including “CPU rivals, items, and emblems for character customization, leaderboards, training move settings, improved throw escape training, and the option to change your opponent’s position and recovery type.”
It’s amazing how this game’s significance for Sony has shifted from a pro to a con. When shown on Sony’s system at E3 2006 as an exclusive port from the arcade, the PS3 version of Virtua Fighter 5 was thought to be the definitive one to own. Featuring 1080p support via HDMI, it’s graphical power was unparalleled. The Xbox 360 version was announced late last year, but it wasn’t coming out until the end of 2007 and it couldn’t put out the same 1080p resolution as the PS3’s spring release. Since then, Microsoft has released the Xbox 360 Elite with HDMI output, and 1080p is fully possible in the 360 version. Now it also has online support. PS3 owners have been seriously cheated, but this is great news if you have a 360.

I wonder if PS3 would have to go 3rd Party like Sega. This is becoming quite interesting. Who knows, this could be one of Sony’s last systems.
